Best Free Graphics and Design Apps for Windows in 2026: Five, Not Fifty

Short answer

Pick by output format, not by which paid product it replaces. Photos and existing images go to GIMP. Drawing from scratch goes to Krita. Logos and anything that must scale go to Inkscape. 3D and motion go to Blender. Screenshots and screen recording go to ShareX, which is the one most people install last and use most.

Free design software is usually sold by comparison. GIMP is "free Photoshop", Inkscape is "free Illustrator", Krita is "free Clip Studio". The comparisons are roughly fair and completely unhelpful, because they tell you what a tool is like instead of what it is for.

The better question is what you are producing. A pixel image, a vector image, a painting, a 3D render or a screenshot are five different outputs, and each of these five tools was built for exactly one of them. Get that match right and free tooling is genuinely competitive with paid. Get it wrong — a logo drawn in GIMP, a photo retouched in Krita — and you will blame the software for a decision you made.

All five are open source. No watermarks, no export limits, no trial period.

1. ShareX — the screenshot tool that does eleven other things

ShareX is on this list first because it is the one entry that everybody needs and almost nobody installs until they have suffered without it.

It captures full screen, a window, a freehand region, or a scrolling capture — a whole web page or long document stitched into one image, which Windows Snipping Tool cannot do at all. It records screen video and produces animated GIFs from the same interface.

Two features push it past being a capture tool. It runs OCR on any image, so text in a screenshot, a scanned page or a video frame becomes text you can paste. And it auto-uploads on capture — to Imgur, Google Drive, Dropbox or your own S3 bucket — putting a shareable link on the clipboard before you have finished framing the shot. For anyone who sends screenshots for a living, that removes the entire save-then-attach step.

The 132.7 MB is large for a capture utility, and it is honestly a dozen tools sharing one window. Note that PowerToys also includes an OCR module; if you already run PowerToys you have text extraction, but not scrolling capture or auto-upload.

Install this if: you use a computer. This is the least conditional recommendation on the page.

2. GIMP — for photographs and images that already exist

GIMP is the right tool when your starting point is a photo or an existing image and your job is to change it.

It has full layer, mask and alpha channel support, which is the baseline for any serious editing, plus the retouching set that photo work actually depends on — healing, clone and perspective correction. The part that matters technically is GEGL, its processing engine, which works at 32-bit floating-point colour depth. That means heavy adjustments do not accumulate banding and rounding errors the way 8-bit editing does. It is the difference between an image that survives ten operations and one that does not.

It reads and writes PSD, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, SVG and WebP, so it fits into a workflow with people using Adobe tools.

The learning curve is real and it is mostly about vocabulary. GIMP's menus are organised around image-processing concepts rather than Photoshop's task-based layout, so tutorials written for one do not map cleanly onto the other. Give it a weekend before deciding.

Use this for: photo correction, retouching, compositing, anything that starts as a file someone sent you.

3. Krita — for drawing and painting from nothing

Krita was written by and for people who draw, and it shows in the details GIMP does not have.

It ships over 100 professional brushes with brush stabilisers — the feature that smooths a shaky hand into a clean line, and the single thing most likely to make you keep it. Anyone drawing with a tablet will feel the difference within a minute.

It also includes a frame-by-frame 2D animation suite with audio playback sync, so a walk cycle or a short animated sequence does not need a second program. And it supports CMYK, HDR painting and non-destructive vector and layer masks, which means work destined for print stays in the correct colour space from the start rather than being converted at the end.

Krita will edit a photo, and GIMP will let you paint. Both are worse at the other's job. If you own a drawing tablet, this is your tool.

Use this for: illustration, concept art, comics, line art, 2D animation.

4. Inkscape — for anything that has to stay sharp at any size

Inkscape is the one on this list people skip and then regret, usually after scaling a logo up for a banner and watching it go soft.

Vectors are stored as mathematical curves rather than a grid of pixels, so the same file renders sharp on a business card and on a building. Inkscape is fully compliant with SVG 1.1 and 2.0 — the actual web and print standard, not a proprietary format — and exports to PDF, EPS and PNG with CMYK colour separation for print.

The toolset is what vector work needs: Bezier curves, node editing, calligraphy tools, boolean path operations. If you have used Illustrator the concepts transfer directly even though the menus do not.

The rule is simple. If the output is a logo, an icon, a diagram, a cut file or anything a printer will handle, it belongs in Inkscape. If the output is a photograph, it does not.

Use this for: logos, icons, diagrams, print-ready artwork, SVG for the web.

5. Blender — 3D, and the most demanding thing here

Blender is a full 3D production suite — modelling, sculpting, animation, simulation, rendering, compositing and video editing — given away free for commercial and private use. Studios ship films with it. There is no free tier and paid tier; this is the whole program.

It carries two render engines for two purposes. EEVEE Next does real-time GPU raytracing, so you see close to final lighting while you work. Cycles is the production path tracer for the final frame, slower and physically accurate. Having both in one program is what removes the usual preview-versus-render disconnect.

Geometry Nodes is the feature that changed how people use it. Instead of modelling every object by hand you build a procedural graph — scatter these rocks across that surface with this variation — and change parameters rather than remodelling. It is the closest thing in free software to a studio asset pipeline. The Python API and add-on ecosystem cover the rest.

Read the hardware line before you download. The 4 GB VRAM requirement is the one that stops people — an integrated GPU below that will either refuse to launch or fail mid-render, and no setting works around it. This is the one entry on the page that a modest laptop genuinely cannot run.

Use this for: 3D modelling, animation, product visualisation, VFX, motion graphics.

All five are open source. Four of five run comfortably on a machine with 8 GB of RAM. The fifth is Blender, and it is the only one where hardware decides the answer for you.

The overlaps, stated honestly

These tools have fuzzy edges and the marketing will not tell you where.

GIMP and Krita both do the other's job badly. GIMP has brushes; they are not stabilised and the canvas does not rotate. Krita has photo adjustments; they are shallower than GIMP's and its healing tools are basic. Pick from your source material, not from a feature checklist.

Inkscape and Blender both export images, and neither is an image editor. Inkscape rasterises vectors to PNG; that is an export step, not editing. Blender's compositor is for its own renders.

Blender includes a video editor. It works, and it is not what you want for cutting footage — a dedicated tool is faster and less likely to lose your project. There are better free options for video work on Windows.

ShareX overlaps with PowerToys on OCR. If you run both, use whichever is already open. ShareX keeps scrolling capture and auto-upload to itself.

What free design tools cannot fix

A calibrated monitor. Colour work on an uncalibrated display is guesswork regardless of software, and this is a hardware problem with a hardware solution.

Adobe file compatibility in a team. GIMP opens PSDs but does not round-trip every layer effect. If a client sends you working files and expects them back, the compatibility gap is a real cost and no free tool closes it fully.

The learning curve. Every tool here has a different interface vocabulary from its paid counterpart. The time cost is real and it is front-loaded — expect a weekend, not an afternoon.

Fonts and stock assets. Free software does not come with a licensed font library. Check licences before commercial use; this is where free projects most often go wrong legally.

The short version

Install ShareX today. It is the only unconditional one, and scrolling capture alone justifies it.

Then install exactly one more, chosen by output. Photo work is GIMP. Drawing is Krita. Logos and print are Inkscape. 3D is Blender.

Check Blender's VRAM requirement before downloading it. 4 GB of video memory, not system memory. This is the requirement people miss.

Do not install all five to "have them". Two well-learned tools beat five you half know, and the storage is the smallest part of the cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is GIMP or Krita the better Photoshop replacement?

Neither replaces all of Photoshop, and they split it differently. GIMP handles the photo side — retouching, healing, clone, perspective correction, colour work at 32-bit float depth. Krita handles the painting side — brushes, stabilisers, canvas rotation. Photoshop does both, which is why one free tool cannot cover it. Decide from whether your source is a photo or a blank canvas.

Can my PC actually run Blender?

Check the VRAM before the RAM. Blender needs an OpenGL 4.3 GPU with 4 GB of video memory, and that requirement is not negotiable — an integrated GPU with less will either refuse to start or fail during render. It also asks 8 GB of system RAM as a minimum and 32 GB for sculpting, which is the highest requirement of anything on this list.

Why can't I use GIMP for a logo?

GIMP works in pixels. A logo scaled up from pixels goes soft at the edges, and print work at 300 DPI will expose it. Inkscape works in vectors — mathematical curves that redraw sharp at any size — and exports SVG, PDF and EPS, which are the formats a printer or a developer will ask for. Using the wrong one here is the single most common free-design mistake.

Which of these are open source?

All five. GIMP, Krita, Inkscape, Blender and ShareX are every one of them open source, with no paid tier, no watermark and no export limit. That is unusual for a whole category and it is why free design tooling on Windows is genuinely competitive rather than a compromise.

Do I need to install all five?

No, and installing all five is about 1 GB with Blender alone accounting for a third of it. ShareX is the only one worth installing regardless of what you do, because screenshots are universal. The other four are format-specific: install the one that matches what you are making and add another when your output changes.
