Technical Specifications & System Requirements
Software notes
Features
- Zero-config remote access that simply works through NAT and firewalls — reach any of your devices from anywhere without port forwarding or exposing services publicly.
- WireGuard under the hood: modern, audited cryptography with fast direct peer-to-peer connections and encrypted relays only when direct paths fail.
- Identity-based sign-in (Google, Microsoft, GitHub, Apple) plus MagicDNS names and stable 100.x IPs make the network feel like one LAN.
- Free personal plan covers 3 users and 100 devices — home labs, family IT and personal remote access cost nothing.
- This is the official Windows client served from pkgs.tailscale.com, Tailscale's own package host, always the current stable build.
Considerations
- The coordination/control plane is operated by Tailscale Inc. — the fully self-hosted alternative (Headscale) exists but is a DIY project.
- Teams outgrow the free plan quickly: more users, advanced ACLs and enterprise features require paid tiers.
- When two devices cannot connect directly, traffic relays through DERP servers — secure, but noticeably slower than a direct path.
About & Overview: Tailscale Mesh VPN for Windows PC
Tailscale is a mesh VPN service built on the WireGuard protocol that connects your devices — laptops, phones, servers, NAS boxes, Raspberry Pis — into one private network (a 'tailnet') as if they were on the same LAN, wherever they are. There is no hub-and-spoke bottleneck: devices connect directly to each other with end-to-end WireGuard encryption, coordinated by Tailscale's control plane using your existing identity provider for sign-in. It replaces port forwarding, dynamic DNS and brittle site-to-site tunnels for remote desktop, SSH, file access, home-lab services, and secure admin access, with features like MagicDNS, exit nodes, subnet routers, and ACLs on paid tiers. The personal plan is free for up to 3 users and 100 devices. This download is the official Windows client from pkgs.tailscale.com.
How to Install & Verify Tailscale Mesh VPN for Windows PC
Download Tailscale from the official pkgs.tailscale.com link on this page and run tailscale-setup-latest.exe (always the current stable client).
Launch Tailscale and sign in with Google, Microsoft, GitHub or Apple — your tailnet is created automatically. Repeat on your other devices with the same account.
Every device gets a stable 100.x address and a MagicDNS name (e.g. my-pc.tailnet-name.ts.net). Try Remote Desktop or file sharing to your home PC from your phone to feel it work.

Frequently Asked Questions & Verification Guide
Is Tailscale free?
For personal use, yes — the free Personal plan includes up to 3 users and 100 devices with the core mesh features. Paid plans add users, advanced ACLs, and business controls.
Is Tailscale a regular VPN for hiding my IP?
Not primarily. Tailscale connects YOUR devices to each other privately; it is not an anonymity service. Its Exit Node feature can route internet traffic through one of your own devices, but it does not provide public VPN endpoints.
How is it different from port forwarding?
Port forwarding exposes a service to the entire internet. Tailscale makes services reachable only by devices signed into your tailnet — invisible to everyone else — with no router configuration.
Is Tailscale secure?
Traffic is end-to-end encrypted with WireGuard between your devices; Tailscale's servers coordinate connections but cannot read the data. Sign-in uses your identity provider with MFA supported.
Which version is this download?
tailscale-setup-latest.exe is Tailscale's evergreen installer URL — it always serves the current stable client. The version and SHA-256 recorded on this page are for the build we downloaded and verified.
