Download Total Commander for Windows PC v11.58 for Windows PC
Total Commander 11.58 by Ghisler: the classic two-panel file manager with built-in FTP, multi-rename, archive browsing, folder sync and a huge plugin...
Technical Specifications & System Requirements
Software notes
Features
- Two panels stay visible at all times, so copying or moving between folders takes one key press instead of Explorer's open-copy-navigate-paste shuffle, and tabs above each panel keep several projects open side by side.
- The multi-rename tool with regular expressions, counters and saved presets renames thousands of files correctly in a single verified pass, with a live preview that shows every new name before anything is changed.
- Built-in FTP and FTPS, folder synchronisation by content, and checksum tools remove the need for three or four separate utilities, and all of them work on local folders and remote servers in exactly the same way.
- Archives open like ordinary folders, and a 30-year plugin ecosystem extends it to cloud storage, phones and exotic archive formats, with new content columns for metadata such as photo dates and audio tags.
- One licence is a single payment that has historically included every future version, and the same key file works from old releases up to 11.58, which makes it one of the cheapest professional tools still sold.
Considerations
- The dense, icon-heavy interface looks dated and overwhelms new users until they invest time in learning the keyboard workflow, and the configuration dialogs run several levels deep.
- Unregistered copies show a startup prompt at every launch that must be dismissed by clicking the specific numbered button it requests, a ritual that quickly wears thin in daily use.
- The 64-bit build needs 64-bit plugins, so favourite extensions from an old 32-bit installation do not always carry over, and a few long-standing plugins were never ported at all.
About & Overview: Total Commander for Windows PC
Total Commander is Ghisler's orthodox two-panel file manager for Windows: two folder panels side by side, a function-key bar along the bottom (F5 Copy, F6 Move, F7 New folder, F8 Delete), and almost every operation reachable from the keyboard without touching the mouse. It treats archives as folders — ZIP, RAR, 7Z and many more open in place so you can copy files out or in — and it packs a built-in FTP/FTPS client, a directory synchronisation tool that compares folders by content, a multi-rename tool with regular-expression support for renaming thousands of files in one pass, checksum creation and verification, file splitting, and a quick viewer (F3) that previews text, images and media. A plugin system built over three decades adds packers, file-system plugins for cloud and phone storage, and content plugins that expose metadata in custom columns. It is best for people who move, compare and rename files all day — developers juggling build outputs, photographers sorting shoots, sysadmins maintaining servers over FTP — and who find single-window Explorer painfully slow. Version 11.58 is a mainly bugfix release with more secure handling of archives with encrypted file names, a new clipboard placeholder in the multi-rename tool, and fixes carried over from 11.57a, and it is a free update for every registered user because Ghisler licences include all future versions.
How to Install & Verify Total Commander for Windows PC
Get tcmd1158x64.exe from the download page at ghisler.com (the direct-download link is hosted on totalcommander.ch, Ghisler's own server).
Launch tcmd1158x64.exe, choose English (or one of 30+ languages) and accept the default program folder.
Keep the recommended option of storing wincmd.ini in the user profile folder so your tabs, history and button bars survive updates.
The unregistered shareware build opens with a window asking you to click one specific numbered button (1, 2 or 3) — click the number it names to enter the program.
Copy wincmd.key into the program folder to remove the startup prompt; any key from an older version still works, because updates are free for life.

Frequently Asked Questions & Verification Guide
Is Total Commander free to download and use?
It is shareware: the download is free and fully functional for a 30-day evaluation, with no feature or speed limits. After that you are expected to register (a one-time personal licence, around EUR 42), although the program keeps working and simply keeps showing the startup reminder.
Why does Total Commander ask me to click a numbered button at startup?
That is the unregistered version's reminder screen: it names a number (1, 2 or 3) and you click the matching button to continue. Registering with a wincmd.key file removes the prompt permanently.
Are older 32-bit plugins compatible with this 64-bit build?
No — the 64-bit build (tcmd1158x64.exe) loads only 64-bit plugins, while the 32-bit build keeps supporting the older ones. Ghisler also offers a combined 32+64-bit installer if you need both on one machine.
Why are some files and folders shown by Windows Explorer not shown by Total Commander on 64-bit Windows?
That was a Windows file-system redirection trap for 32-bit programs accessing C:\Windows\System32, which silently showed them SysWOW64 instead. Installing the 64-bit build of Total Commander avoids the redirection entirely.
When pressing Alt+Enter on some files (mostly EXE), Total Commander becomes unstable and even crashes. Why?
Ghisler's own FAQ traces this to a faulty third-party shell extension loaded into the Properties dialog, not to Total Commander itself. Disabling suspect context-menu extensions one by one (with a shell-extension viewer) identifies the culprit.
