Software notes

The Bottom Line: CudaText is the editor we point to when someone finds VS Code heavier than the job in front of them. It starts in about a third of a second, sips memory, and still covers the working programmer's checklist: syntax highlighting for over 300 languages, multi-caret editing, split views, regular-expression search, code folding and a binary viewer that shrugs off 10 GB log files. Because it is written in native Object Pascal rather than an embedded browser engine, everything feels instant in a way Electron-based editors rarely manage, and it stays responsive on hardware that makes bigger editors feel sluggish. The trade-offs are real but fair. Configuration lives in JSON files instead of friendly settings screens, the plugin ecosystem is smaller than the VS Code marketplace, and the interface looks plainer than its commercial rivals. None of that matters much once the Addons Manager is open and the editor has been bent to your habits. For students, sysadmins editing configuration files on modest machines, and developers who want a free editor with no telemetry, no accounts and no subscription nags, CudaText is an easy recommendation — especially since the Windows build is fully portable: unzip it, run it, and carry it on a USB stick with your settings intact.

Features

  • Startup is exceptionally fast and memory use stays low, so CudaText feels responsive even on old laptops and virtual machines.
  • Syntax highlighting covers more than 300 languages out of the box, with code folding, a code tree and multi-caret editing included.
  • The built-in binary and hex viewer opens files of unlimited size, which makes it genuinely useful for inspecting huge log files.
  • Python plugins and add-ons extend it with LSP language servers, linters, formatters, an FTP panel and a project manager.
  • It is completely free for personal and commercial use, with no accounts, telemetry or feature-locked paid tier.

Considerations

  • Settings are edited as JSON text files, which is efficient for power users but intimidating for beginners expecting checkboxes.
  • The plugin catalogue is far smaller than the VS Code marketplace, so niche language tooling may simply not exist.
  • The interface looks dated next to modern editors, and some advanced features only appear after installing optional add-ons.

About & Overview: CudaText for Windows PC

CudaText is a fast, cross-platform code and text editor written in Object Pascal by Alexey Torgashin of UVviewsoft. It opens in a fraction of a second, ships with syntax highlighting for more than 300 languages, and handles multi-gigabyte log files in its binary and hex viewer without choking. The tabbed interface supports split views with up to six groups, multi-caret editing, a minimap, code folding and a fuzzy command palette. Almost everything is configured through plain JSON files rather than dialog boxes, and a large Python plugin ecosystem adds LSP support, linters, formatters, an FTP panel, a project manager and hundreds of community add-ons, all completely free, even for commercial work.

How to Install & Verify CudaText for Windows PC

STEP 1
Download and extract the ZIP

Download the CudaText Windows 64-bit ZIP and extract it to a folder of your choice, for example C:\Tools\CudaText. No installer is involved and nothing is written to the registry.

STEP 2
Run cudatext.exe

Open the extracted folder and double-click cudatext.exe. The editor starts immediately and keeps all of its settings inside its own folder, so it is fully portable and can run from a USB drive.

STEP 3
Add optional plugins

Use Options > Addons Manager inside the editor to browse and install extras such as LSP language servers, linters, formatters and the project manager, then restart CudaText to activate them.

Frequently Asked Questions & Verification Guide

Is CudaText really free for commercial use?

Yes. CudaText is open source and the author explicitly allows free use even for business. There is no paid tier, no licence key and no feature that unlocks after payment.

Does CudaText need to be installed?

No. The Windows ZIP is a portable build: extract it anywhere and run cudatext.exe. Settings and plugins stay inside the same folder, which makes it ideal for USB drives and locked-down work PCs.

How is CudaText different from Notepad++?

CudaText is cross-platform (Windows, Linux, macOS), uses JSON configuration files, and extends through Python plugins with LSP support. It also handles very large files and multi-caret editing well, while Notepad++ remains Windows-only with a C++ plugin system.

Can CudaText open very large log files?

Yes. Its binary and hex viewer is designed for files of unlimited size and can display logs of 10 GB or more, and the text engine is built to stay usable with huge lines where many editors freeze.

Does CudaText support plugins like VS Code extensions?

It has its own add-on system with hundreds of Python plugins, lexers, themes and tools installable from inside the editor via the Addons Manager, including LSP clients for code intelligence.
