Software notes
Features
- It offers far more search methods than rivals, including byte-level content comparison, similar images, similar music, file properties and hard link detection.
- AllDup can search for duplicates inside ZIP, RAR and 7Z archives, where ordinary duplicate finders never look.
- A checksum database stores results from earlier scans, so repeated searches of large libraries complete much faster.
- The integrated file manager never forces deletion, offering move, backup and replace-with-hard-link options alongside previews for checking each group.
- It is freeware for private users and companies alike, actively updated, and also available as a portable edition that needs no installation.
Considerations
- The range of methods, filters and options makes the interface dense, and first-time users should expect a learning curve.
- Similar-image and similar-music searches are processor-heavy and can take a long time over very large collections.
- AllDup cannot judge which copy of a file matters to you, so careless bulk deletion of duplicates inside program folders can still break applications.
About & Overview: AllDup for Windows PC
AllDup is a freeware duplicate file finder from Michael Thummerer (MTSD) that goes well beyond simple name matching. It can compare files byte by byte by content, or search by name, size, dates, attributes and hard links, and it has dedicated methods for spotting similar images and similar music tracks that are not exact copies. Searches can look inside ZIP, RAR and 7Z archives, store checksums in a database so repeat scans run faster, and save complete setups as reusable profiles with folder and file filters. Results appear in grouped lists with previews, and the integrated file manager lets you delete, move, back up or replace duplicates with hard links, keeping you in control of every file.
How to Install & Verify AllDup for Windows PC
Get AllDupSetup.exe (version 4.5.72, about 22 MB) from the AllDup download page on the official alldup.de site and save it to your Downloads folder. A portable edition is offered on the same page if you prefer no installation.
Double-click AllDupSetup.exe, choose your language and install folder, and finish the setup. AllDup installs as a normal Windows program for all the Windows versions the vendor lists, from Windows 7 to Windows 11.
Launch AllDup, add the folders you want to check under Source folders, pick a search method such as file content, enable any filters you need, and start the search. Review the grouped results and use the File Manager to decide what happens to each duplicate.

Frequently Asked Questions & Verification Guide
Is AllDup really free?
Yes. AllDup is freeware from Michael Thummerer — the duplicate searching, comparison methods and result handling are available without paying. The current version listed here is 4.5.72.
Which is better, dupeGuru or AllDup?
They take different positions. dupeGuru is cross-platform and also free, which suits mixed Windows/Mac/Linux households. AllDup is Windows-only but goes deeper: byte-by-byte content comparison, dedicated methods for similar images and similar music, searching inside ZIP, RAR and 7Z archives, and a checksum database that makes repeat scans faster. Choose dupeGuru for platforms, AllDup for depth on Windows.
Is AllDup safe to use?
AllDup is designed to keep you in control: results appear in grouped lists with previews, and its integrated file manager lets you choose per file whether to delete, move, back up or replace duplicates with hard links. Nothing is removed automatically, so a scan alone never costs you a file.
Can AllDup be used to delete duplicate files?
Yes. After a search, the integrated file manager lets you delete duplicates outright, move them elsewhere, back them up, or replace them with hard links so the space is freed while every path still works.
